Remembering Sridevi (1963 – 2018)
India bid farewell to Sridevi following the Bollywood star’s sudden death in Dubai. She was only 54 years old.
Sridevi is survived by her husband Boney Kapoor and 2 daughters Janhvi and Khushi. Her family has been overwhelmed with the love and adulation showered by her fans and colleagues in the entertainment industry.
As we look back at Sridevi’s successful career, we found some important takeaways.
Sridevi recognized her talent and passion for acting at the young age of 4. Her versatile acting skills enabled her to play romance, musicals, drama, comedy and action roles. In fact, she is known as the double role queen. She played dual roles in 7 films!
She was very hardworking. She is one of few actresses to have made around 300 films in five different Indian languages. The Indian government awarded her the fourth highest civilian honour, the Padma Shri for her contributions to the entertainment industry.
Her success was impressive given that she never experienced a normal childhood. She lost out on going to school and college but she had an insatiable thirst to keep learning. Until her early 20s, Sridevi a south Indian did not speak a word of Hindi, the language of Bollywood films. She taught herself Hindi at the age of 23.
Through her career spanning 5 decades, she has challenged herself with spunky roles in contrast to the shy Bollywood heroines of her time. At the peak of her career, Sridevi decided to take a break from acting to look after her two daughters, Janhvi and Khushi. She was committed to her family even in the midst of skyrocketing success. She enjoyed motherhood as much as she did acting.
In a male-dominated industry, she was the only actress with the ability to carry a film without a male actor. It is no wonder that she earned the title of the first female superstar!
Rest in peace Sridevi, you will always be remembered fondly!
