Last week was witness to the death of Aretha Franklin and Madonna’s 60th birthday. Both Aretha Franklin and Madonna are recognized as iconic singers and performers of their times. Let’s talk about them.

On  Friday the world mourned the death of Aretha Franklin, the ‘Queen of Soul’.

What is ‘soul’ music? Music that artists like Aretha Franklin and Marvin Gaye popularised. It is influenced by jazz, rhythm and blues, and gospel.

Some of you might recognize this song that became an anthem for women, for black empowerment and for people fighting for civil rights all over the world – Respect.

Aretha Franklin earned a lot of respect on and off stage. As a little girl, she learned to play the piano without any help or prior music knowledge. Her unique four-octave vocal range earned her many awards. She was the first lady to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and she sang at the swearing-in ceremonies of 3 US Presidents. The world will greatly miss this amazing woman.

Last week also saw pop-icon Madonna bring in her 60th birthday!

Madonna is known for her songs ‘La Isla Bonita’, ‘Papa Don’t Preach’, ‘Like a Prayer’  and many more catchy tunes. Her racy outfits and elaborate stage performances still bring smiles to the faces of people like your parents. She revolutionized pop music for people of their generation. She is still performing and looks better than ever! 60? She is living proof that age is just a number.
