Christmas is Coming!

Christmas time is a magical time for everyone, whether you are Christian or not! And for good reason… it turns out that this winter celebration to celebrate the birthday of Jesus Christ actually started many many years before Christianity became the main religion in the Western world.

Dec 21, the night of the winter solstice is the longest night and shortest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere. Ages ago, when people worshipped nature, they celebrated this darkest night of the year, to chase away the blues. They drank wine and ate meat and made merry, waiting for the Sun God to get over his illness and become strong again! These were called midwinter festivals and people in different parts of Europe had their own stories and traditions for this time.

The birthdate of Jesus Christ is not really known, but cleverly, when Christianity started getting more popular, they adopted Dec 25 as the day of Christ’s birth. They tied in this day with the ongoing celebrations and helped people to make the most of the midwinter festival and merry making.

So this made us scratch our heads and think. Where do some of the things we associate with Christmas come from? For starters, who is Santa Claus, what’s the story behind his reindeer, what’s up with kissing under mistletoe, and who thought decorating a Christmas tree was a good idea?

Visit us every day to find out as we count down to Christmas!
