What is the Project all about?
The Indian Government launched the Digital India Initiative in 2015 to improve internet connectivity in India and to make government services available online. The Indian railways decided to provide free WiFi Broadband services to railway users at major railway stations.
The broadband service they are using is called Railwire. This is the combination of high-speed connectivity on fibre cables by RailTel and the technology from Google.
The first free WiFi service was launched at Mumbai Central Station in January 2016. Today, Indian railways offers free WiFi connectivity at around 700 stations across India and covers around 8 million people a month!
