Elon Musk’s The Boring Company has been awarded a contract to connect O’Hare International Airport, one of the busiest airports to downtown Chicago. The Boring Company as its name suggest is in the business of boring tunnels. The company has been given the task to design and build a high-speed rapid transportation line underneath Chicago.
According to an official press release from the Chicago Mayor’s office, passengers will travel in driverless high-speed pods made by Tesla. The pods will have electric skates that will run along a nearly 18-mile track underground. The electric pods will travel at about 150 miles per hour, reducing the normal transit time from 40 minutes to 12 minutes! This new system will be faster than any public transportation in Chicago today.
Musk’s team will start the boring of two tunnels as soon as they get the necessary approvals.
Initial reports are saying that this ambitious project will cost less than USD 1 bln. The Boring Company has promised to pay for it! They will recover their investment through ticket revenues, advertisements, and other in-vehicle sales.
