This is what the dictionary says that ‘gaming’ is:

gaming

ˈɡeɪmɪŋ/

noun

  1. the action or practice of playing gambling games.

“gaming is evident everywhere in Las Vegas, not just on the Strip”

  1. the action or practice of playing video games.

“I’m fourteen years old and enjoy gaming and playing baseball”

It turns out that your parents might actually be right by restricting your screen time! The World Health Organisation has added ‘gaming disorder’ to its list of diseases and mental conditions. Some people play for most of the hours they are awake, and keep away form interacting in the real world with real people. That’s a problem. But everything in moderation is what we believe in!

The Gaming Industry is pretty big. It generated $116 billion in revenues in 2017, according to a report in VentureBeat. That makes it bigger than the movie industry by leaps and bounds! VentureBeat also said that within the gaming industry, mobile games showed the highest growth from 2016 to 2017. Those are games that you play on your phones.

Some of the big companies in the field in the hardware department (gaming consoles) are Microsoft, Nintendo, and Sony. Big game makers are Tencent (market leader in 2016, with $18.1 billion in revenues according to Newzoo), Sony, Apple, Microsoft, Electronic Arts (EA) and a variety of others.

So let’s talk about the E3 Gaming Expo that just finished in Los Angeles, CA, USA. This is a  gamer’s Mecca. All the companies that make video games showcase their updates and give people a chance to demo the games before they are released. This helps them to get buyers, distributors and customers. Of course, fans dress up as their favourite gaming characters, and there’s a lot of excitement and fun surrounding the event!

Here are some of the game updates and releases you might be interested in: Minecraft and TellTale Games had collaborated before, to make Minecraft Story Mode in 2016. This basically uses Minecraft characters, puts them into a story, and gives users a chance to steer these characters through different stories, and to make different choices along the way, thereby changing the outcome.

At the E3 Gaming Expo, Minecraft, TellTale Games and Netflix announced an arrangement where Netflix will stream the interactive stories in Minecraft Story Mode later this year! This means that those of you without a device like a PS4 might be able to play this, and you won’t have to download the app either. Just stream it on Netflix!

There’s a new Spiderman game being released for the PS4 in 2018, and it looks uber cool. Check it out!

Kingdom Hearts III will release in January 2019 for PS4 nd XBOX One. If you don’t know this one, it features some of your favourite Disney and Pixar characters from Toy Story, Monsters, Inc, Frozen, even Mickey Mouse and Goofy! They are on a quest that is too complicated to get into now. Check it out!

There’s a new Super Smash Bros (Ultimate Fighting Game) coming out, Enterprise Associates is going to release Battlefield 5 to take on Fortnite head to head, and there are a bunch of new Virtual Reality Games coming too. Luckily, you will not need to invest in any new hardware this year as no updates were announced for the gaming consoles.
