The French celebrate Bastille Day on July 14 every year. It was on this date in 1789 that the French people stormed the ‘Bastille’, the Fort in Paris, freed the prisoners there, and started to overthrow the French monarchy. This movement then spread across Europe – where the commoners started to overthrow the royalty that they were fed up with. This resulted in a different system of government in many countries.
Bastille Day is celebrated with gusto every year. One of the celebratory events is a military parade. France’s new President, Emmanuel Macron, had US President Donald Trump as a guest in Paris on Bastille Day this year, which was last Friday. Macron decided to have the military band play some contemporary American pop music rather than traditional marching music, to help solidify a friendship between America and France. He also wanted to reach out to more young people in France. Check out what the marching band did! Do you recognise the Daft Punk song?
