The Doklam (also called Doka La) region is an area in the Eastern Himalayas. It is located at the high altitude of 16,000 feet. It is an area whose ownership is disputed for over 50 years now. China, India and Bhutan all claim ownership of this region. There have been many talks over the years to try and figure out a solution to this problem, but it has not been resolved yet.
Why does everybody want control of this area? It is located in the Chumbi valley at a tri-junction of India, Bhutan and China. It is important strategically (for defense) for all three nations.
So why is it in the news these days? over 2 months ago, on 6 June, 2017, China suddenly took over part of this area and started constructing a road there. India and Bhutan have objected. The armies are now facing each other off here.
