Where is Guam?

Guam is a small island located in the West Pacific Ocean. The isolated island is 30 miles long and nearly 4,000 miles west of Hawaii.

What do we know about Guam?

It has a population of 160,000 people. The Chamorro people make up nearly half the population of the island. They are descendants of the original settlers from South East Asia.

The Island was first discovered by the Europeans when the Spanish explorer, Ferdinand Magellan, landed there.

In 1950, after WWII, Guam was made a territory of the US. The US have since maintained several military bases there. There are more than 6,000 US military personnel in Guam. Its proximity to China, Japan, the Philippines and the Korean Peninsula has long made the island an essential position for the U.S. military.

The island’s sandy beaches and aquamarine waters also make it a popular getaway for travelers from Japan and South Korea.

Currently, it is in the news as North Korea’s Supreme Leader Kim Jong-un had threatened to target the US bases in Guam.
