Gorakhpur is a city in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. It has a hospital that has a wing to treat children with serious illnesses. The hospital, Baba Raghav Das Medical College is one of the larger hospitals in that area. People bring their sick kids here from other parts of the state as well as from other neighbouring areas.

On 12 August, 2017, there were a rash of deaths in the children’s ward. Some investigation revealed that these deaths may have been due to a halt in the supply of oxygen to the hospital. A lot of sick people require special care with oxygen to help them to breathe. It is suspected that the hospital had not been paying its bills to the oxygen supplier and this led to a shortage of oxygen stored at the hospital.

The new Chief Minister of UP, Yogi Adityanath, has promised to look into this serious matter.
