North Korea’s growing threat

North Korea has been in the news recently for testing long range missiles. On Tuesday, they went one step further by testing a mid-range ballistic missile that flew over Japan. It crossed over the northern island of Hokkaido and landed in the Pacific Ocean.

World leaders are concerned although no one was injured during this test exercise. With these missile capabilities, the North Koreans could target American, South Korean and Japanese bases in Northeast Asia. USA and Japan have called for an emergency United Nations Security Council meeting to discuss North Korea’s growing threat.

Earlier this month, the North Korean leader Kim Jong-un threatened to hit the American owned island of Guam. Japan and America are allies. Many people believe that Tuesday’s missile test over Japan could be another indirect threat to America.

The United States have been conducting bombing drills in the region as well. Yesterday, America sent some of its most advanced warplanes to South Korea to take part in these drills.  They also carried out military exercises in Hawaii and shot down medium-range ballistic missiles. People believe these activities are aimed at intimidating North Korea.
