North Korea is in the news again, but this time, it’s positive!
Quick recap: North Korea is a small country in East Asia. Kim Jong-un is the supreme leader of North Korea. It is known to be a very secretive, closed country with very few friends. The country has been building nuclear weapons.
In the recent past, the North Korea regime tested their long-range missiles that could reach Japan and the United States.
As a warning, Trump put sanctions on North Korea. Sanctions are rules to penalise another nation. They often limit trade to hurt the country’s economy.
Kim made threats to the United States. In return, Trump threatened North Korea too. The world watched the United States and North Korea stumble toward what could be a devastating war.
This new year brought about a welcome change.
1. In his annual New Year speech, Kim surprised the world when he suggested an open dialogue with South Korea.
2. He took another positive step by sending North Korean athletes to attend the Winter Olympic Games in South Korea in February.
3. Last week, officials from South Korea met with Kim in person. This was a big milestone for the two nations that had cut off contact completely.
4. At the meeting, Kim said he was willing to talk about getting rid of weapons. Kim was ready to talk — and Trump agreed to meet the leader face to face! This will be the first meeting in the history of a sitting U.S. president and a North Korean leader! He also agreed to meet with South Korean President Moon Jae-in.
Trump believes the sanctions on North Korea have put pressure on Kim to talk. It will take time to set a location and date for the historic meeting. Both nations will have to agree and make sure the meeting is safe. Officials said the big event will happen by May.
