Which is the biggest country in the world by area?
Russia is the biggest country in the world by area. The capital city of Russia is Moscow. Its government is now based on a democracy i.e. the president is chosen in direct elections.
The country held their presidential elections over the weekend. Vladimir Putin won a 4th term as the president. Mr. Putin got more than 76% of the vote. With more than 56 million votes, this was his biggest win. That was almost seven times as many votes as any other candidate.
Who were his opponents?
- Pavel Grudinin, leader of the Communist party finished in a distant second place.
- Alexei Navalny, Putin’s most vocal opponent in the race for president, was barred from running in December 2017 on the basis of corruption.
Putin has led the country as either president or prime minister since 1999. He will continue to lead his nation for another six years. Putin’s fourth term will officially continue until 2024. At that point, Putin will be 71 years old and will have led the country for almost 25 years. By law, he will have to step down from the position as president then — unless the law changes. Hmmm… this sounds familiar! Didn’t Xi Jinping, leader of China, just figure out how to stay in power forever?!
