Vive la France!

It has been a year of upsets where whatever people thought was going to happen, didn’t. Britain voted to leave the EU – unexpected! Donald Trump won the US Presidential election – unexpected! Now France goes to the polls to vote for its new President. What’s the unexpected so we can bet on that?!

The current President of France is Francois Hollande

Elections for the new President will be held on May 7, 2017

The Top 2 candidates are

  • Marine Le Pen of the Front National party
  • Emmanuel Macron of an independent party, En Marche (means ‘One the Move’)

What’s the main difference between what the two of them want for France?

Marine Le Pen favours

  • leaving the Euro as a currency and returning to the French Franc, and holding a referendum to allow people to say if they would like France to remain in the EU or not.

Emmanuel Macron favours

  • strengthening ties within the EU

Marine Le Pen also wants to

  • reduce immigration into France
  • shut down some Muslim mosques and not allow the use of religious symbols such as headscarves
  • enforce the rule that companies can only make people work for 35 hour a week

Emmanuel Macron wants to

  • cut the tax rates for companies to encourage businesses to grow within France
  • allow companies to decide the number of work hours per week with their employees

The current polls show Emmanuel Macron as slightly ahead. So what will happen on May 7, 2017? Should we expect Macron or Le Pen?
