The Americans having lost the race to get the first human into space were determined to win the race to get the first man on the moon. Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin got to the moon on the Apollo 11, specifically in a module called the 'Eagle', in 1969.

The Luna 2 was the first spacecraft (unmanned) to land on the moon in 1959. This was a Russian ship.

A dog called Laika, launched on board the Soviet (Russian) Sputnik 2 spacecraft on November 3, 1957, was the first animal to make it into orbit. There was a monkey launched into space earlier, but that wasn't really high enough to make it into earth's orbit (path around the sun).

What was the first message that Neil Armstrong radioed in to Mission Control in Houston, Texas, upon getting to the moon?

Neil Armstrong landed the lunar module, the Eagle, in the Sea of Tranquility on the moon. He then radioed in: "Houston, Tranquility Base here. The Eagle has landed." When he made it down the stairs to set foot on the moon, he used words that are not immortal: "That's one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind"!
