What’s this creature above? An ichthyosaur! While it was not related to what we call dolphins, it sure looks like it was!
These creatures existed about 150 million years ago and their bones have been found in America and Europe. An ichthyosaur fossil was just discovered in India, in the state of Gujarat. This creature has never been found in this region of the world before. Studying this can give the scientists some more information about how widespread these creatures were, what kind of climates they lived in, what kind of food they liked, what kind of terrain they liked, and what the earth looked like in that time period, amongst other things.
The fossil that was found is very well preserved. The ichthyosaur is 16 feet long. Its teeth are worn out apparently, and are also cracked, signifying that it wasn’t afraid of eating creatures that were hard on the outside.
