A 150 million-year-old fossil of a carnivorous dinosaur fetched a mind-boggling $2.36 million at an auction in Paris on June 4.

Woah! Who paid so much for a dinosaur skeleton? An unnamed French art collector bought it at an auction held inside the Eiffel Tower in Paris.

Where did they find this one of a kind dinosaur skeleton? It was dug up on private land in Wyoming, USA almost 5 years ago in 2013.

Why is this skeleton so special? The paleontologists who examined the remains closely noticed that the teeth and skull set it apart from an Allosaurus species that they initially thought it was.

They concluded that the nearly complete fossil belonged to a new form of dinosaur species. According to their calculations, the dinosaur was probably nine meters (30ft) long and 2.6 meters high and lived during the late Jurassic period.

Why are paleontologists upset with this private sale? Though paleontologists are excited about this one of a kind fossil, they are upset to see fossils being auctioned off like art pieces.

Scientists and museums are unable to pay such high prices and thus important specimens will fall into the hands of private collectors. In addition, scientists will have limited access to conduct further research and lose the ability to reexamine, re-measure, and reinterpret their findings.

We hope the skeleton’s new owner would put it on public display! Where do you think he or she might store it???
