Bali is a very popular beach holiday destination in Indonesia. It has all the stuff we love – clean wide beaches, lovely blue waters, fun restaurants on the beach. The perfect spot for relaxing and chilling. Bali also has mountains that give tourists a different experience. People can go white water rafting there, and there are lots of artists and sculptors who work there in the hills.
Indonesia has over 130 active volcanoes and is part of what is called the Pacific Ring of Fire. This is a region that has a bunch of active volcanoes.
There is an active volcano called Mount Agung in Bali. It is on the northeastern side of the island. This has apparently erupted in the past, and might be about to do so again. How do we know this? Scientists measure the earth’s activity near volcanoes that are known to be active. They have detected many tremors in the ground near the volcano, and feel that there are many, many small earthquakes near volcano right now, and that this activity is picking up.
It last erupted in 1963 and maybe more than 1,000 people died at the time, with all the hot lava and ash that came gushing out! We don’t know what’s going to happen this time, but the authorities have cleared people from the surrounding areas so that they minimise the chance of people getting hurt.
