A relatively quiet year in sports, 2017, still had its share of epic moments and stories. Here are our top 10, in no particular order…
Tennis: Federer – Nadal: With both of their careers having been written off as done and dusted, the ageless duo provided the greatest comeback in sports this year. They split the four Grand Slams down the middle with Roger winning the Australian Open and Wimbledon, and Rafa taking home the French and US Opens. Oh! And they are number one and two in the world again. Djokovic and Murray who?
Tennis: Serena Williams- She barely played this year, but makes the list for the simple reason that she won the Australian Open while carrying a child. Yes, it was way back in January but Serena was pregnant when she won the year’s first slam. Don’t really care what the record books and people say about comparing people from different eras but she is the greatest tennis player of all time.
Indian Badminton- India’s most successful sport in 2017, our shuttlers exceeded all expectations. PV Sindhu and Saina continued to do well but the break-out star was Srikanth Kidambi who reached a ranking of world #2 in November of this year winning four Superseries tournaments, two of which were Premier.
Athletics: Bolt Retires- Arguably the greatest track and field star of all time Usain Bolt called it a day at the 2017 World Athletics Championships. One of the saddest sights in sports this year was an injured Bolt collapsing on the track in his final race, the 4x100m relay. Athletics will miss the showman from Jamaica who captured the entire world’s attention every time he stepped onto the track.
Boxing: Floyd vs McGregor- Dubbed as the fight of the century and Boxing vs UFC it captivated the world’s imagination and interest. A lot of people believed that the future of Boxing depended on Floyd Mayweather’s performance against Connor McGregor. At the end of the day Floyd schooled the UFC champion, and Boxing won.
Athletics: Russian Ban- In a historic move, the International Olympic Committee banned several Russian athletes from the Winter Olympics over doping. Russian doping has been a topic of interest for years and this move showed that the IOC was sending out a clear message of ‘zero tolerance’ for performance enhancing drugs.
Cricket: Virat Kohli- A year to remember! Over a thousand test runs with 5 centuries at an average of 75.64, almost fifteen hundred ODI runs with 6 centuries at an average of 76.84, and a phenomenol record as Captain Virat. 2018 will be a challenge as India play most of its cricket overseas, but till then lets enjoy what he did in 2017.
Football: Real Madrid– Even Messi the powerhouse couldn’t stop Real Madrid’s impeccable performance. They bagged 5 major trophies this calendar year: La Liga, UEFA Champions League, UEFA Super Cup, Supercopa de Espana, and the FIFA Club World Cup!
American Football: The New England Patriots served up a spectacular Super Bowl win vs the Atlanta Falcons. They were down 28-3 partly into the third quarter of this epic game, when the team, led by quarterback Tom Brady put everything they had into it and walked away the champions, winning 34-28! Down 25 points to winning the Super Bowl!
Basketball: The Golden State Warriors beat the Cleveland Cavaliers to claim the NBA Title!
