2018: GERMANY KNOCKED OUT OF GROUP STAGES

Call it the Champion’s curse but everyone knows that Germany played horribly and South Korea came prepared. The defending champions lacked class & imagination as they bowed out of the World Cup in Russia

Their support across the globe was incredible. We celebrated together in 2014, but sometimes in football you have to accept defeat and admit that your opponents were better.

Call it a historical pun but no German campaign has ever done well in Russia. This team lead by Joachim Loew became the first German side to fall out of group stages in 80 years. It wasn’t just the lack of attacking bite but the defenders too were caught napping at multiple occasions.

After the shocking 1-0 opening game loss to Mexico, no one discounted Germany. The 4-time champions were expected to bounce back but sadly no one learned from mistakes. Despite a nerve-racking 2-1 win against Sweden which came courtesy Toni Kroos’ stunning free-kick, the Germans were staring down the barrel. The pressure of a do-or-die game was immense and the team with high expectations cracked and conceded 2 injury time goals and bowed out of the tournament in a humiliating manner.

Head Coach Joachim Loew had just extended his contract with the national side till 2022 but it looks like h might resign after the team dropped to the lowest in his 12-year reign. The result did shock everyone but none could read the writing on the wall. The Germans had played 4 International Friendlies and lost 2 of those matches. Their only win came against Saudi Arabia which came 9 days before their opening game loss to Mexico.

The embarrassment in Kazan ensured that the team didn’t even go back to the hotel and went straight to the airport.
