India triumphs over Malaysia at the 2017 Men’s Hockey Asia Cup. The tournament was held from 11 to 22 October 2017 in Dhaka, Bangladesh.

The tournament had two pools (groups) of four teams each. India was part of Pool A and remained undefeated through the tournament. They played the victors of Pool B, Malaysia and defeated them 2-1 in what seems to be a nail biting final.

Players Ramandeep and Lalit Upadhyay scored the 2 goals for India. Ramandeep Singh scored the opening goal in the 3rd minute, while Lalit Upadhyay scored in the 29th minute. The Malaysians fought back hard and player Shahril Sabah scored a goal in the 50th minute. The Indian team kept up their defence and won the title.

The Indian captain Manpreet Singh was very proud, he said “”It is a great honour to captain this team. Hockey is a team game and we are a family and this victory was possible because of the team work we put in. We are enjoying this victory.”

For India’s new chief coach, Marijne Sjoerd, it was a perfect start to his career as this was his first tournament as the national hockey coach.

India automatically qualifies for the 2018 Hockey World Cup in India.
