India’s English Summer

Indian batsmen might be the best in the business today but it will be the bowlers who can possibly win us the series vs England if they can take 20 wickets in every match. The 5 match test series starts on 1st August with the opening match to be played in Birmingham.

As always, all eyes will be on Virat Kohli as the Indian captain is expected to lead the batting department from the front. But it can’t be just him, the Indian batting lineup needs to fire. Most Indian batsmen look shaky ahead of the series. Shikhar Dhawan bagged a pair in the practice game against Essex and his form as an opener will be of primary concern. His opening partner Murali Vijay too looked rusty and his trademark long and patient innings will be needed if the team needs a good start. Apart from Kohli, only KL Rahul looks in fine form and he will have to play a pivotal role. Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane too will be under pressure to perform.

The bowling department looks depleted as Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Jasprit Bumrah will miss at least 3 tests due to injuries. The pressure and responsibility will be placed on the old warhorses Ishant Sharma and Mohd Shami. Ravi Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja are expected to lead the spin department but one can never rule out Kuldeep Yadav from the Playing XI. The team management might just choose the young chinaman spinner over Ashwin considering his exploits in the ODIs and T20s against England.

India has won a total of 6 tests vs England in their backyard in 57 outings. Only thrice, India has won the series in England in 17 attempts. In the long and tiring 5 match test series, anything can happen and probably the outcome of the 1st test in Edgbaston will set the tone for the next 4 tests.
