Mary Kom is a feisty Indian boxer, mother of three boys, and a member of the Rajya Sabha (Upper House of Parliament in India). She has won the World Championship 5 times, and a Bronze medal at the London Olympics. She just battled against North Korea’s Kim Hyang Mi, and clinched her fifth Gold medal at the ASBC Asian Confederation women’s boxing championships held in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, late last week.
Now that’s what we call determination!
Mary Kom’s is a story of grit and determination. She was born in Manipur, India, and grew up in a slum. She was introduced to boxing through the television – she loved to watch Muhammad Ali matches on television. This is what inspired her to pursue her dream, overlook her family’s disapproval, and keep going at it until she has become one of the most successful sports women in India!
