Cristiano Ronaldo smashed a hat-trick as European champions Portugal held 2010 World Cup winners Spain to a cracking 3-3 draw at Sochi.

All eyes were on Cristiano Ronaldo, as his first match for Portugal was against Spain. This is his 4th World Cup, and many football fans are wondering if this will be his last shot at lifting the trophy. The Real Madrid star grabbed the opportunity to make this outing in Sochi very memorable. A hat-trick that ensured a vital point for Portugal against Spain, ensuring that the top 2 slots in Group B are still up for grabs!

Spain gifted Portugal a penalty right at the start of the match, Ronaldo didn’t miss and the Portuguese had an early lead against the Spaniards. Spain was fighting hard and they were rewarded quite quickly. Diego Costa muscled his way through Portugal’s defence to net a stunning equaliser in the 24th minute. A simple mistake from Spain’s goalkeeper David de Gea ensured that Ronaldo got his 2nd goal of the night as Portugal led 2-1 at the half-time break.

Portugal, ranked 4th in the World Rankings were in command but that lead lasted for a very short time as Costa once again restored the balance early in the 2nd half. Then, against the run of play and defying all expectations, Spain’s Nacho came up with a screaming volley to give his side an unlikely lead against Portugal.

At 33 years of age, Ronaldo re-wrote history. With 2 minutes left, the Real Madrid star converted a superb free-kick to land an equaliser for his side. This was his 51st career hat-trick and he is now the oldest player to have scored a hat-trick in world cup history. The goal by CR7 was enough to help Portugal settle for a draw against Spain as a total of 6 goals entertained football fans across the world
