Teen Star Golfer from Nepal

Recently, a major news agency reported on a teen star golfer from Nepal. We were intrigued!

Sport is known to build bridges and go beyond borders and cultures. In many sports, as long as  you have talent and the fire to succeed, it doesn’t matter who you are, where you’re from, or how rich you are.

With games like golf though, things are can be a little more complex. The rich have a far greater advantage as they have the resources to gain membership at golf courses, sign up for costly lessons, buy expensive equipment, and travel to tournaments.

It is heart warming when a young girl without means plays well enough to have her life changed by the game! Meet this star who grew up in a maintenance shed but has come a long long way from there!

Pratima is an 18 year old 12th grader who picked up golf at the age of 11 and played her first tournament at the age of 12. She has since collected 32 amateur titles!

How did she get her break? The Nepal Golf Association (NGA) General Secretary CB Bhandari said that the NGA had started a Youth Project in 2010 where they reached out to promising players and trained them. Pratima was one of these players.

Pratima is currently one of the best female golfers in Nepal. Well-wishers and the Nepal Golf Association made sure that she raised the funds and got a travelling coach to go to the United States with her in July 2017. Qatar Airways donated tickets to her, and sent her to America where she competed in five golf tournaments in California. She won one and finished in the top six in two others! It was important for her to gain experience and the chance to improve her game. After all, she dreams big – she wants to be the first Ladies Professional Golf Player from Nepal, and wants to compete in the prestigious tournaments in the Ladies PGA (Professional Golf Association) Tour!
