Will FIFA 2018 be known as the World Cup of upsets?

The FIFA World Cup 2018 has been a tournament of surprises so far. The defending champions, Germany, suffered a shocking loss in their opening game against Mexico. This wasn’t the only match that surprised football fans around the world. Here are some other surprising outcomes:

PORTUGAL VS SPAIN (3-3)

The European Champions led by Cristiano Ronaldo were considered the favourites against 2014 World Champions Spain. A total of 6 goals were scored on the night, but there was no clear winner. Ronaldo was clearly on cloud 9 after scoring his 51st career hat-trick and  proved a point!  For Spain, defense is the key to success and we hope goalkeeper David de Gea’s mistakes in this match aren’t repeated.

ARGENTINA VS ICELAND (1-1)

Lionel Messi had a night to forget as Argentina took on Iceland in their opening game. Iceland worked as a team, but Argentina basically didn’t. Plus, Messi missed a penalty which could have been the winner for Argentina. Iceland’s unknown yet strong defense prevented the Argentinians from scoring more as this was a surprise draw for both sides. Argentina will be looking to shake-off this result and prepare better, but Iceland will be pumped after holding the 2-time Champions to a memorable draw.

MEXICO VS GERMANY (1-0)

Without a doubt, the biggest upset of the World Cup so far has been Mexico beating defending champions Germany. This is the third straight instance of the defending champions losing their opening game of the World Cup. Italy lost in 2010, Spain were humbled in 2014 before this. There is no doubt that Germany can bounce back but their next opponent will be very tricky. The match against Sweden will almost be a do-or-die affair.

BRAZIL VS SWITZERLAND (1-1)

Neymar was struggling to be fit for the World Cup but once he was on the pitch against Switzerland, the superstar was expected to dazzle the fans. Sadly, that didn’t happen. The Brazilian striker was crowded-out by the Swiss as a strong defensive performance earned the European side a crucial point against the mighty Brazil. Neymar will have to raise his game if he wants to live up to the expectations and pressure from the nation that has won 5 World titles.
